Equality news round-up: Prop 8 campaigner Frank Schubert is still doing anti-gay campaigns, and more

July 20, 2012

Marriage equality

By Scottie Thomaston

- During the Prop 8 trial, the Olson/Boies team constantly referred to “the 14 Supreme Court cases” in which marriage was described as a fundamental right. AFER has a full list of the cases here.

- The Pentagon will allow troops to march in uniform for the first time in the San Diego gay pride parade.

- Anti-gay activist Frank Schubert (of Prop 8 fame) is involved in more anti-gay marriage campaigns this year.

- The Obama administration has proposed a rule change that “would amend the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB) regulations and allow federal employees to cover the children of their same-sex domestic partners under the program”

- Another anti-gay marriage amendment to the 2013 defense appropriations bill was introduced – it would ban gay servicemembers from marrying in a military facility and prevent chaplains from officiating.

- The HHS is giving enough money to federal programs to eliminate state waiting lists for HIV/AIDS health care.

The lead sentance in the article…

"Four years ago, Frank Schubert was a well-paid political consultant for what he jokingly calls "the forces of evil" — tobacco, timber and pharmaceutical companies — when he agreed to lead the 2008 campaign to repeal gay marriage in California."

Make no mistake, Mr. Shubert. You are STILL working for the forces of evil.

Doesn't the provision re chaplains being forbidden to preside at same gender marriages violate the first amendment both with the establishment clause and freedom to exercise religion for those chaplains whose religious beliefs permit them to officiate. Are we to have a new State Religion of Fundiamentalist Evangelicals/Roman Catholics/Mormons?

"Permit?" How about their religious views call upon them to minister to these couples.

I like this point. The religious right's constant concern trolling about "religious liberty" hypocritically always only applies to conservative Christians. Not progressives, and certainly not Muslims or other religious minorities.

I don't know the rules re chaplains, but generally speaking, the soldier leaves many (most?) of his or her rights at the door when they enter boot camp. The First Amendment pretty much goes out the window in the military — for the grunts. I don't know what it is for anyone else.

I always say "Get some Muslims to try to use the same rights". There was an awesome moment recently about school vouchers. A Muslim school applied for voucher money in Louisiana and a teabagger legislator was flabbergasted that they could do so. When they voted for the law, she thought it was only for Christians:

That's not true. Service members do have rights. They lose some, but when stated like that it's just nonsense. If people complain and their superiors listen, things can be done. The problem is that Christianity (usually of the fundamentalist variety) is so entrenched in American military culture that many people are afraid to speak up. Especially lower ranking ones. Many are just cowed into silence out of fear for their careers.

But there are some who do speak up and get things done: http://freethoughtblogs.com/rockbeyondbelief

Isn't it amazing that some lunatic can exercise his 2nd Amendment rights and buy a complete arsenal, walk into a movie theater and go in a killing spree…..no background check, no license….

And yet, all hell breaks loose, if a pair of h-o-m-o-s-e-x-u-a-l-s walk into a City Hall and request a marriage license. Their love for one another, their marriage is SO DANGEROUS, that the required "marriage license" is DENIED and they are escorted out of City Hall in handcuffs for disturbing the public peace.

    America…..such a great place to live….to watch a movie !

Wisconsin PPP poll: We're finding public opinion on same-sex marriage moving rapidly towards acceptance just about everywhere, with the pace of opinion change accelerating. Wisconsin is no exception. Badger State voters still oppose gay marriage being legal, but by a much narrower margin than when PPP last asked about it less than a year ago. Last August, 39% wanted same-sex marriage to be legal and half illegal. That spread is now only 43-47. Republicans are almost identically opposed as then (12-81), but Democrats are up from 62% to 68% support and independents from 42% to 47%. The latter group is now in favor (47-39), when they were narrowly opposed 11 months ago (42-44).

69% of Wisconsinites want same-sex couples to at least have civil unions, up from 67% previously. That includes 78% of Democrats, 75% of independents, and even 48% of Republicans.
