On the BSA thing: I haz a sad
I had a really good experience in Boy Scouts, and I'd like my sons to be able to experience the same thing, but I can't in good conscience sign them up with the BSA until their discriminatory policies against gays and atheists are changed (Note that barely anybody is even talking about their shameful anti-atheist policy). Luckily the oldest of the two is only 3 right now, so there is some time for them to get their crap in order. Sigh.

Unfortunately, the BSA is no longer the organization that it was when we were growing up. It is now controlled almost entirely by right wing religious groups. It's really sad for me to say that I think the BSA was more welcoming when I was growing up than it is today.

This article shows Mormon church still top sponsor:

It’s a different sort of "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy for gays — this one involving the Boy Scouts of America and its units sponsored by the Utah-based LDS Church.

Perhaps there will be an alt-boys group by the time your kids are old enough to join, James….one that's dedicated to the truly moral stance of respecting other people, not one focused on coercing kids into reactionary beliefs with the blunt club of conformity.

Oops, I'm sorry. I thought scoutingforall.org was an alternative scouting program. It is not. According to the website, it's "… an education and advocacy organization reaching out to gay and nontheist youth and adults in our effort to get the Boy Scouts of America to rescind its exlusionary policy." Well, there's always Camp Fire USA.

There are alternatives like the Navigators, Campfire US or the Baden-Powell service organizations. They just have relatively few chapters and are hardly present everywhere. But you can create your own chapters if you find enough other parents.

The argument that the scouts ought not to take taxpayer money has actually already been settled by a federal court. Although the BSA has a discriminatory policy, a policy I don’t agree with, they are not considered a religious organization and thus the state would not be forbidden from supporting them if a majority in the lawmaking and executive positions wish to support them. http://lawblog.legalmatch.com/2012/07/23/boy-scou…
