June 20, 2012

Marriage equality

By Scottie Thomaston

- A new PPP poll from Colorado shows that 56% of Colorado voters support the civil unions bill in the state. The bill was killed by GOP legislators a few months ago.

- The Village Voice‘s Steven Thrasher has a long and interesting piece about LGBT organizations and free speech.

- Think Progress has analysis of the HHS report on LGBT health that I linked to yesterday.

- A report from the Human Rights Campaign details LGBT training in hospitals.

- Attorneys from Lambda Legal have an article in the New York Law Journal discussing the recent ruling that public school students in the state are not protected from discrimination and harassment under the Human Rights Law.

New Yorker magazine has fabulously beautiful cover featuring two June Brides on cover, clasping hands. (Maybe everyone else has seen it already?)

Well, you know, it HAS been a YEAR here in NY that we've had marriage equality. And guess what? They sky, not fallen. Polygamy? Still not legal. People and lawn furniture? Not getting married. No one has married their own mother. Heterosexual marriages? Surprisingly still popular. Children? Cared for. Fire and brimstone? Haven't noticed any, although it is 100 degrees in NYC today. Religion? Still exists. Bigots are not being silenced or waterboarded. Cats and dogs… well, ok, some of them are getting along, but it is NOT because two women can marry each other.

Oh, and NOM, most of us here in NY find it perfectly "socially acceptable" that our friends and neighbors are now allowed to marry. And those who don't are becoming an increasingly small, generally elderly, unpleasantly bigotted, sadly out of touch minority.

You know, I don't really think the bigots were worried about any of that stuff happening. I think they were more worried about it *not* happening, because that would then just blow holes in all their theories and prove them sooooo wrong. Much better to stay in the dark and fear the worst. Buit they are rapidly losing the ability to use those excuses anymore. They are just not playing in Peoria.

Fear tactics cease to work when the stuff you are supposedly afraid of fails to materialize. And just as little kids grow out of being scared of the monster under the bed, society is growing up and realizing that fear of homosexuals spending their lives in consentual, committed MARRIED famiies is just as silly.

Of course, some people never do grow out of worrying about that monster under the bed, no matter how old they get. Sad.
