9th Circuit Court of Appeals Briefs Prop 8 trial

By Jacob Combs

Thanks, as always, to Kathleen for bringing these our way.  The 9th Circuit has just announced that San Francisco’s KRON4 television station can broadcast next Thursday’s hearings live and record them for later broadcast.  Exciting news–we’ll have more on this as it develops.

Also, today was the deadline in the 9th Circuit for reply briefs from both parties regarding the California Supreme Court’s decision to grant the proponents of Proposition 8 standing to appeal under California law.  The appellate court had asked both sides to comment on the effect of the state court’s decision on their respective arguments.  So far we’ve only received the proponents’ brief, which you can read in full below.  We’ll post the plaintiffs’ brief when it arrives.

BREAKING: Australia's Labor Party just voted to add support for marriage equality to its platform!!

  • 7. Dee  |  December 2, 2011 at 4:31 pm

Does not diminish the victory, but bear in mind it will likely be a conscience vote for Labour. That means it will likely fail in the current Parliament unless the Liberal Party are allowed a conscience vote as well and have enough equality supporters to make up the difference.

    Off topic but http://www.theaustralian.com.au/national-affairs/
    YESSSSSSSSS
There is still the fact even if it was brought to a vote there would be a conscience vote and it would lose but still ONE STEP CLOSER.

i think if the Liberal Party allows a conscience vote (and i think they will, marriage equality in Austraila has a huge amount of support now that the Labor Party supports marriage equality and plus 62% of Austrailians are in favor, it will pressure them to do so) i think it be a close tough vote, but marriage equality will pass

Awesome points. I wish that the State Attorney General had made them instead.

Heyo – please can you also include URLs to the briefs in these posts and not just the embedded Flash objects that cannot be read on iPads and iPhones? Thanks.

Hi Lawrence. Thanks for the suggestion–we're going to start doing that!
