Got some love? Pam’s House Blend could use your sweetness right now.

Community/Meta

If you read Pam’s House Blend, then you know that Pam Spaulding is a gem. And now she needs our help. As Karen Ocamb wrote this morning, “Influential blogger Pam Spaulding of Pam’s House Blend is going into the hospital today to undergo surgery. It is not life-threatening – but it is painful and costly. She is taking unpaid medical leave and she and her wife Kate have to dip into their savings for the next couple of months. Having influence is not the same as having money.”

If you have a few extra coins to help Pam out right now, click here. Meanwhile, check out Jeremy’s post from earlier today, cross-posted at Good As You. — Eden

By Jeremy Hooper

200812101131-1Three or four times a year, this writer is lucky enough to see and spend time with one Ms. Pam Spaulding. Be it a panel, speaking gig, conference, or simply a night out for Indian food in midtown Manhattan, every time Pam and I are lucky enough to get back in the same physical room together, we easily pick up the conversation right where we left it. Because she’s just one of those people — a sincere greeter, active listener, and never-ending idea well with all the makings on an easy, pleasurable conversationalist. To both me and my husband, Pam’s become like that awesome cousin who we don’t get to see nearly enough, but whose every-so-often pop-ins always provide a welcome surprise (kind of the the same way we feel about Amy Farrah Fowler on the current season of “The Big Bang Theory” — a guest star who raises the regular cast’s game).

But today, I’m going to ask you all to help me send some of this good mojo back Pam’s way. Love, thoughts, prayers, Facebook messages, or whatever postive vibe-maker you might use in your own life: Pam’s having surgery this AM, so both she and wife Kate would certainly appreciate any early holiday cheer you can e-blast in their direction.

Or if you’re someone who prefers to put a dollar sign with those vibes, there are certainly a ton of ancillary expenses that Pam and Kate are going to incur while everyone’s favorite blogmistress rests and recuperates. Those wishing to make donations can do so via Paypal, or via the following physical addy:

Pam’s House Blend
105 West Hwy 54, Suite 265,
Box #113,
Durham, NC 27713

Whatever you do, be sure to keep some thought space directed towards North Carolina. Pam’s such a vibrant part of this digital LGBT family that we’ve collectively created. We’re a family that has to stick together through the victories and the setbacks — the champagne toasts and the life annoyances.

Proposition 8: Thirteen Out-of-State Attorney Generals Don't Want California Gays to Get Married, Join George Wallace in History Books

With the appeal hearing for the Proposition 8 lawsuit set for Monday, December 6, we thought it would be a good time to look into the out-of-state attorney generals who stuck their noses into California's business and filed a friendly brief on the behalf of anti-gay marriage forces.

The mainstream media, as far as we know, haven't named each member of this shady crew, so these politicians have been able to keep working under the radar with few people holding them accountable for taking an ugly stand against equality.

The list of the mean main 13:

Republican Troy King of Alabama; Republican Daniel S. Sullivan of Alaska; Republican Bill McCollum of Florida; Republican Lawrence Wasden of Idaho; Republican Gregory Zoeller of Indiana; Democrat James D. "Buddy" Caldwell of Louisiana; Republican Mike Cox of Michigan; Republican Jon Bruning of Nebraska; Republican Tom Corbett of Pennsylvania; Republican Henry McMaster of South Carolina; Republican Mark Shurtleff of Utah; Republican Ken Cuccinelli of Virginia; and Democrat Bruce Salzburg of Wyoming.

Thanks Kathleen. I am most curious about the newest email 'Filed appearance notice of. Richard B. Rosenthal for amicus curiae Justice Donald B. King and The American Academy of Matriomonial Lawyers.'

  • 20. Kathleen  |  November 23, 2010 at 4:54 am

It's just a notice that attorney Richard B. Rosenthal will be representing the named amici curiae in the case. I think this means that this attorney will be present in the courtroom during arguments.

Hey Pam! Here is some love coming at you, with hopes for a speedy recovery!

  • 22. anonygrl  |  November 23, 2010 at 5:58 am

    Does he get to speak?

  • 23. Kathleen  |  November 23, 2010 at 6:01 am

It's up to the parties whether they want to give any of their time for the amicis' reps to speak. So far, none have indicated that will be happening. Other than that, they would only speak if the judges address a question to them and I think that's unlikely.

  • 27. Kathleen  |  November 23, 2010 at 6:20 am

I agree – the more they show who they really are, the more marginalized they'll become.

DADT Repeal Ad FOX Won’t Air

Palm Center Director Aaron Belkin stated: “I am surprised that Fox News would reject an ad featuring allied Generals, given that host Bill O’Reilly and guest contributor Liz Cheney have both expressed support for open gay service. This is an important time for input from all sides on this issue, and I hope Fox will reconsider.”

NOM still losing ground – and that makes this pro-equality supporter very happy…

Chafee stands by Assembly deciding on gay marriage

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Same-sex marriage opponents mounted a post-election effort to try to change Gov.-elect Lincoln D. Chafee's mind.

In his role as director of the Rhode Island chapter of the National Organization for Marriage, Christopher Planet tried to convince a top Chafee aide of the political merits of allowing voters — rather than state lawmakers — to decide the issue during a 2012 public referendum.

According to its national website, NOM was founded in 2007 in response to "the growing need for an organized opposition to same-sex marriage in state legislatures."

Plante said he dropped by Chafee's transition office unannounced about two weeks ago, and came away from his conversation with aide Michael Trainor believing that the governor-elect was open to sitting down and talking with people on all sides of the gay marriage debate.

Hence his "surprise'' when he received a letter from Trainor, reaffirming the position that Chafee stated repeatedly through his campaign for governor over the last year, which is:

"The governor elect feels that the issue should be addressed as soon as possible by the General Assembly, and does not believe that the question should be decided by a ballot referendum.''

Trainor also reiterated Chafee's belief that: "Marriage equality is a basic right that should be extended to all Rhode Islanders — a question not only of fairness and justice, but of economic development as well.''

"I was surprised,'' said Plante on Tuesday, "because Mr. Trainor indicated that he thought that Governor-elect Chafee would sit down at the table with all parties … I left there thinking they maybe we'll get a roundtable. We'll get 'Marriage Equality' … We'll get NOMRI to sit at the table and talk about how we are going to go forward on this … But what he has done is rejected our position out of hand.''
