Madison, WI: In largest crowd to date, equality supporters outnumber NOM by more than 8 to 1

July 27, 2010

NOM Tour Tracker Right-wing

by Adam Bink

Fresh off a massive #FAIL in Indianapolis where pro-equality supporters more than tripled the number from NOM’s side, and where one of their supporters was caught with a sign claiming the solution to “gay marriage” was two nooses, we’re in Madison, WI today.

Arisha just radioed in- fifteen minutes before the NOM rally, the police already  started to surround the place with yellow caution tape.

Which can mean only one thing: Brian Brown and his anti-equality followers are back on tour.

But you know what excites me even more?

This:

466 equality supporters

That’s a hand-counted crowd of 466 pro-equality supporters, my friends. Four hundred and sixty-six. Easily the biggest crowd yet!

NOM’s side? Arisha counts 54.

Below, some excellent signs from the tour. We’ll have more details as this develops…

Signs for equality in Madison

Signs for equality in Madison

UPDATE BY ADAM (12:17 PST) : I just got off the phone with Anthony, our videographer on hand. He told me the pro-equality marchers came down from the University of Wisconsin-Madison to the State Capitol and took over the entire street- something you can see in the photo below:

Pro-equality supporters marching down to the rally

Sidewalk to sidewalk, the street was full of nearly what we counted as 466 pro-equality supporters. Amazing.

Anthony also confirmed that Brian Brown is indeed back on tour- and up to his old tricks. Where before Brian and NOM attempted to keep our NOM Tour Trackers from covering the event in Annapolis, this time they had the local authorities wall off their supporters in the statehouse courtyard with yellow tape- and refused to let equality supporters inside. It brings separate but unequal a whole new meaning. Anthony and Arisha did manage to get inside, though.

Anthony is uploading video of this soon. The question we at NOMTourTracker.com have to ask is, what are Brian and NOM afraid of that they need to wall off an entire section of the courtyard?

UPDATE BY ARISHA (12:22 PST): Poor Brian. Just as he and his supporters decided to re-join the tour, NOM was met with its largest equality counter-demonstration to date.  466  equality activists marched down the streets of Madison and up the steps of the State House to greet a decent-sized crowd of NOM supporters – relative to their other tour stops – that at one point reached 54 people.

Nonetheless, the massive upstaging of NOM couldn’t go by without a little spin from NOM’s speakers.

“Thank you all for coming,”  Julliane Appling , a representative from Wisconsin Family Action began.   “[We hoped our turnout would be larger], but our people actually have jobs.”

Maggie and Brian both cheered.

“I ran up the steps in front of the [equality] marchers,” Brandy, a Wisconsin equality activist said.  “As I watched the sea of rainbows ascend the steps, I was in tears.  This is my town – my community – and today, I am proud.”

“They had months to prepare for their rally, we organized our [counter-protest] in one week,” chimed in another equality activist, also in tears, a as a chant of “We are the majority” began in the background.

She stopped talking to me to join in with the chant and disappeared into the crowd before I could get her name.

“In many of the places we’ve gone to, people have attempted to silence us,” said Brown, acknowledging the sizable equality protest.  “In Rhode Island, protestors attempted to shout us down, to storm the stage.”

Oh Brian….Rhode Island was soooo two weeks ago. But now that you’re talking First Amendment rights, let’s talk a bit about our cameraman that you had the Maryland police threaten to arrest in Annapolis the last time you were on tour.

Stay tuned.  We’re working to upload Brian’s answer to our First Amendment query, along with a funny video you’ll love.

UPDATE BY ADAM (1:42 PM PST): Okay, our first video is in, courtesy of commenter “New”:

Wow.

The second is Anthony’s coverage standing from the Statehouse looking down at the throng of equality supporters marching up the street. It’s a bit of a different perspective than the video from the comments I posted above.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_DqhFPfISnI]

The

Also, his frame “I believe we are part of the new civil rights movement” is laughable. Civil rights is about extending rights to those who are oppressed, and Brian supports amendments that restrict them. We all know it, and we’re going to continue to demonstrate it along with countless families and couples on tour.

Let me have a family

And of course, Maggie was on hand:

I (and others) was wondering why they chose Madison. I used to have extended family live there, and it was among the most liberal cities in the state, if not the region. If they were still living there, my family would have been at the rally for sure.

  • 8. Evan  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:04 am

    My thoughts exactly!!

(adding Madison, WI to my travel wish-list!)

This just put a really big smile on my face. Can't wait to see how NOM spins it…

  • 12. Josh (SF)  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:08 am

I really got very upset after looking at the older gentleman, with the sign of the nooses. Really started to make me fear the possibilities… Until I saw these pictures, these brought tears of joy to my eyes and made me truly hope that someday, we all might just have equal rights in this country!

  • 13. Lesbians Love Boies  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:08 am

Had to pop in to see these photos. FANTASTIC.

Love all the beautiful people. Wish I didn't have to work today so I can read all the comments – but I will subscribe so I can read them all later.

A big 'Shout Out' to Wisconsin.

  • 14. anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:08 am

I am sitting here in my office with tears running down my face. That is fantastic!!! In what they expected to be the strongest leg of their tour, I am sure… this is great! You GO Wisconsin! Show the world that you stand up for equality!!!

I want to kiss each and every one of them, and I can't even see the pictures yet(they, like a bunch of other internet stuff, are blocked here in the office…). Can't wait to get home and see them!!

We need to work on human-city marriages next.

  • 18. nightshayde  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:10 am

Not to nitpick — but I don't think "gentleman" is a term that applies.

  • 24. JT1962  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:17 am

Slightly off topic but did anyone else notice that Louis's blogspot blog is now "Open to invited readers only"? Really interesting that you not only can't comment on his b.s. but now you can't even read it. What exactly is he trying to hide, how much of an idiot he is? Yes, this post was written cleanly because I could have used a ton of swearing here. Talk about him being a hypocrite.

  • 25. Dave in CA  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:18 am

    Hooray Wisconsin!

Oh boy, I just can't wait to see the NOM photos.
    Eenie meanie minie moe…

  • 26. Audrey GetEQUAL Smit  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:18 am

He admits in the video that he "had those temptations" when he was younger but someone showed him the "truth" in the Bible and he changed his ways. Sad, really. And did you see how he almost got violent when the NOM guy touched him? Wow.

  • 27. Dave in Maine  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:22 am

I was hoping that with each passing day there'd be more time for us to organize (OUT organize!) the NOM people. We started with a small group here in August, Maine on 7/14, but WOW! 466 in Madison!!!

    YEAH!!!

    Dave

  • 28. Dave P.  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:24 am

So sorry to hear that you can't see the pictures right now. Sounds like you're going to have a looong day. But as you can probably already tell – you're gonna love them! Get the hankies ready when you get home : )

And an observation – our folks at these events continue to impress with their signs and messages. They just keep getting better and better. Absolutely beautiful!

  • 29. Dave in Maine  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:26 am

Yes, I was wondering about how they will spin it too.

This is really fantastic! I am really really pleased with this! The photos are great!

    Dave

  • 30. Dan Hess  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:26 am

I officially love Madison now. Think I'm taking a road trip there ^_^

On a slightly off-topic note, apparently Judge Vaughn Walker doesn't sit on the Ninth Circuit. I was under the impression that he did, but while I was in San Francisco I was told otherwise. >_>

  • 31. l8r_g8r  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:26 am

Yup. He doesn't believe in civil discourse. The marriage equality opponents cannot respond in logical discussions so they avoid us. If they avoid us, they think they won't look like bigots.

  • 32. Dave P.  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:28 am

More photos please!! Either here on this site or via a link, whatever you got. Thanks so much Madison WI, you made my day!

  • 33. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:31 am

My birth state, and really where I am from, WISCONSIN! Great job Wisconsin, to everyone, everyone who showed up and participated many MANY, a zillion thanks!!! I am so grateful to each and every one of you.

Adam, thanks for getting this information up quickly. I slept like a baby last night after reading about the huge success in Indianapolis, and I will sleep well tonight becuase of the information you have posted.

I hope Minnesota comes through with a large counter protest.

    Go Mad City, go Wisconsin!!!

I wonder who those 50 people who went to the NOM rally were. Maybe all from the same church or something? Another FAIL for NOM,

Hi Louis! Hi Brian! Hi Maggie! Your numbers of supporters is not looking all that great tee-hee.

  • 34. Jude  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:34 am

HUGS to the people of Madison, WI. You people rock!

  • 35. Sam  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:34 am

We may have a fucked up marriage amendment in our constitution and we may have a supreme court that can't see the difference between civil unions and gay marriage but this proves that there are people in my state that do believe everyone deserves to be treated equally and that includes the right to marry for gay and lesbian couples.

  • 36. nightshayde  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:36 am

Yes — and then they can tell their little bigot friends that they're so full of love & would never dream of engaging in any bigot-type behavior… and mock the pro-equality side for just wanting to make the poor h8ters look like bigots.

    *sigh*

  • 37. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:36 am

I suspect NOM is faced with a dilemma: How do they energize their base of hateful bigots w/out being formally identified as a hate group. (after all, they're all about love – just ask them).

They seem to have been doing this by allowing Louis M to run the "we hate homos" campaign while keeping NOM's public message one of 'we're just a bunch of nice heterosexuals looking out for the little children (and spreading god's word).'

But lately, it has been more and more obvious that Louis M and NOM are one and the same and it became impossible to distance themselves when Louis became an integral part of the summer tour. As long as he's blogging and reporting on the tour, he is part of the public face of NOM.

So, what to do? Either make Louis stop blogging or make sure his message is shielded from the non-believers. I suspect that Either NOM asked him to stop blogging, he refused, and they came up with this compromise OR NOM wants his hate-filled messages to continue, but they don't want it to be so easily available to the public and media.

  • 38. nightshayde  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:39 am

I'm actually skipping that video. I can't see it at work (anything that links to youtube or almost any other site that streams videos is blocked), and I don't want to watch it at home because I know it will put me into a funk. My family doesn't deserve having to deal with a depressed angry-at-the-world riled up woman.

  • 39. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:40 am

I especially like the last pic, the one of the young woman in a yellow dress with 2 children in front of her. She has a great sign. See the children Louis/Brian/Maggie, see we have families too.

  • 40. Sagesse  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:40 am

Midwesterners are very laid back, welcoming, tolerant people. My grandparents and great-grandparents, on my American mother's side, come from Minnesota.

  • 41. James Tuttle  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:42 am

YAY!!! You go Madison, WI!!! This warms my heart.

  • 42. Steve  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:43 am

There are many more great Thomas Jefferson quotes where that came from. Though others are far more explicit attacks on mainstream Christianity and organized religion.

  • 43. Andrew_WA  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:43 am

Seeing that sign upset me as well. Advocating violence and death and then hiding behind it with a scripture verse is not appropriate. It can incite people to do violence.

It makes me want to create a sign with shellfish and showing people being Stoned to death. Or creating a sign of folks having pork for dinner (cloven hoof) and being killed. I can quote Leviticus versus as well.

I mean – if we pick and choose what versus coincide with our personal beliefs…

How someone can feel that because they have a book in their hands that they can sit upon the throne of judgement of God and know my heart is beyond me.

Regardless of what they think – someday – we will ALL have perfect wings! (Don't laugh at me, PPM)

    Love,
    Andrew

  • 44. Billy Bradford  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:44 am

Me too, crying in my office at work. We are reaching the "tipping point" in history for Marriage Equality. I can feel it.

  • 45. Ann S.  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:44 am

Judge Walker is a district court (federal trial court) judge. The Perry case will be appealed to the 9th Circuit.

  • 46. PamC  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:45 am

    Madison, you ROCK!!!

I've visited a couple of times, but am definitely overdue for a fresh revisit. I love seeing this kind of turnout, it's energizing and hope-inspiring.

  • 47. Ann S.  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:47 am

Madison is indeed a very liberal city, what with the biggest university in the state being there and all. Maggie, Brian and Louis (hi, guys!) went there to be on the steps of the statehouse, which is also why they are going to St. Paul, Minnesota, tomorrow.

I hope my friend who lives and works in Madison made it to the rally, but I can't see her in the crowd. Hooray for the crowd!

On, Wisconsin! And as the UW football cheer goes:

    Fuck 'em, Bucky!

  • 48. Tralfaz  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:47 am

Yeah I think "asshole" is the term that fits.

  • 49. Henry  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:48 am

    OK, I'm crying.

This tour just gets better and better.

Madison, for those who don't know, is a delightful, progressive, well-educated, and physically beautiful city (check out that isthmus). Glad to see that NOM was extremely unsuccessful in trying to soil it.

NOM is fittingly Westboroing themselves at every stop.

Maggie Gallagher and Brian Brown need to pick up some tips from Shirley Phelps-Roper on glassy-eyed determination to persist in conveying their message from God in the face of disagreement at every turn.

  • 50. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:50 am

I predict NOM's take will be:
Biggest crowd yet in favor of protecting marriage!
Everyone said Madison, WI, has bought into the gay agenda and we wouldn't have any supporters there. But this was our biggest showing yet and proves that average Americans believe in the sanctity of marriage. As we expected, there were protesters there, with their usual message of hate and trying to drown out our messages of love and the importance of family. But we know that history is on our side and we will prevail. <3 MG

  • 51. Mark M. (Seattle)  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:51 am

I can't stop wiping the tears away…..these are some of the most gorgeous pix I have yet to see.
Thank you for showing NOM and the rest of the world that we are about love and families.
I love each and every one of you!!!!

  • 52. Henry  |  July 27, 2010 at 4:59 am

Yes. On some level NOM must realize that more openly hateful people can bring in energy and money, but that can have a political cost. Quite the dilemma for them.

You are going to get strong activism from the most emotionally disturbed folks: Former homosexual James Hartline in San Diego, who believes God sends bee swarms to punish people for being pro-gay, former homosexual Greg Quinlan (somehow unable to find a breathing woman who will date him), and former homosexual Larry "Nooses" Adams, can all be counted on to speak up and pitch in for NOM.

Cheering from the wings as well are Peter LaBarbera, who is self-described as not being formerly homosexual, and yet possesses within him a curiously insatiable wish to oppose homosexuality. Also Brian Camenker and Amy Contrada in Massachusetts — crazy as hell.

  • 53. Bill  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:00 am

    Here's a picture from a NOM supporter in Indianapolis…
    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1xQeOPE9ePU/TE5S11Es76I

But they don't HATE, or anything like that, right???????

  • 54. nightshayde  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:00 am

I wonder if they'll mention the poor little children who were forced into carrying signs advocating immoral behavior.

Poor kids — being brainwashed into thinking equality is a good thing!

  • 55. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:02 am

I raised my kids in Santa Barbara, CA. My oldest son (an actor) did a show at Madison Rep back in the '80s. He said that Madison reminded him a lot of Santa Barbara, both in its beauty (situated on a lake instead of an ocean) and the liberal attitude of many of the people.

  • 56. Ed C  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:03 am

    Subbing

  • 57. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:05 am

Why only 23 states NOM, go for all 50 I say!!

  • 58. Richard W. Fitch  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:05 am

"Hey! Look fellow gNOMes! We DOUBLED our attendance from yesterday. Isn't that great??!!!

  • 59. VRAlbany  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:06 am

    Yes! Beautiful! Go Madison!!!

  • 60. Heather Sheridan  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:07 am

You know what I would have said to that jackass with the Nooses. "God ruined a perfectly good asshole when he gave you teeth." Think about that for a second to figure out the insult. It is one of my favorites to use against these bigots. I truly believe that ignorance breeds prejudice. That is why even though I am Pagan. I read and study all religions so I make an informed decision on which ones are utter bullshit. I live in syracuse, NY and would LOVE to go to the counter protest along with my wife and 2 children in DC. Anyone want to carpool who has a van. We can all pitch in on gas. Also I am trying to start a chapter of Queer Rising in this area join us on facebook so we can organize and move forward. The facebook page is here.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/50933783@N07/4834691

But clearly not the majority of all the people at that rally. There don't seem to be any photos of the crowds in the 4 photos they have up so far….

  • 62. Ron  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:10 am

I like your idea for signs…but how about take it a step further and picket the Golden Corral or Red Lobster during the Sunday after-church lunch crowd.

Quote Leviticus in addition to signs like "We can Pick and Choose from the Bible also", "Equality is a Family Value", etc.

  • 63. Tom A.  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:11 am

I'm pretty much convinced that our energies could be better placed by not being REactive to NOM's activities.

Imagine if all of the hundred of hours spent counter-protesting were spent doing PRO equality work.

If it weren't for the PRO equality websites and blogs, 99.99 % of Americans would have no idea that this "tour" was even happening.

  • 64. James Tuttle  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:11 am

What a great idea! I'm really excited to see the turnout in D.C. That'll make national headlines for sure.

  • 65. Audrey GetEQUAL Smit  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:17 am

@Tom A, Most of us on this page already do tons of pro-equality work!

  • 66. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:23 am

Duh! How could I have omitted such an important message! Add to MG's post: "My heart went out to the innocent children they were exploiting for their cause. These poor children will never know the love of a real family – one with a mother and father." Love, MG

  • 67. Matt  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:23 am

I love Madison. It truly is the San Francisco of the midwest.

  • 68. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:24 am

    Very nice! :)

  • 69. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:27 am

See my prediction for NOM's spin in the post below. Let's see how close I come to the real thing. :)

  • 70. Marco  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:29 am

I wish they'd come to Chicago. Please. Please, Maggie.

  • 71. Anna Bryan  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:30 am

If NOM is on tour and unchallenged, then people think their views are acceptable, more people start believing them, and it snowballs. NOM's own message is "it's OK to believe that people are not equal, there are others like you, we represent a majority of Americans"

The only way we can win is by showing them otherwise.

  • 72. l8r_g8r  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:33 am

"In Rhode Island protestors attempted to shout us down, to storm the stage"

Umm… so other people tried to talk to you (okay, they were shouting) and so they're trying to silence you? From the pictures, it looks like you were shouting right back.

You have the right to speak according to the first amendment. You do NOT have the right to be heard.

  • 73. AndrewPDX  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:39 am

Yeah, I really wish they'd come out West so we couldjoin in the fun… But they're probably scared of catching a conscious or other moral disease from all teh gayz and our disrespectful love.

I wonder… Instead of waiting for them to come to us, what would be the cost to send CC et al on a nationwide tour of our own?

    Love,
    Andrew

'I mean – if we pick and choose what versus coincide with our personal beliefs…'

I think I posted this many months ago, and most of you may have already seen it:
    http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/drlaura.a

I'll cut/paste the text of this 'letter' here, but see the link for some history. A modified version of this letter was published in the editorial section of the Rocky Mountain News, aimed at Marylin Musgrave – a hard right-wing hater in Colorado, who fortunately lost her house bid.

    "Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

    a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

    e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

    f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

    g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

    h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

    i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

I am so sick of his "storm the stage" rhetoric. I was in Providence–Brian, there was no stage, only a podium. You were standing on the sidewalk, in front of the capitol steps, in a park-like area on the same level as those around you. Three protestors strolled, not stormed up to you, and two got in your face and shouted. You didn't appear alarmed, in fact, you didn't skip a beat–you shouted right back at them.

Boy, if a crowd truly stormed his nonexistent stage, where are the bruises and broken equipment??

  • 76. Colter  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:49 am

Isn't this entire NOM Summer of Marriage Tour actually just an excuse for NOM leadership to get a free vacation out of the donations its benefactors?

Honestly, wouldn't the tour have been much more powerful if it were to hit State houses while the assemblies were in session (like the cold of February and March)? Instead, it lets the leadership take a nice trip across the country on somebody else's dime.

  • 77. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 5:55 am

This is what I am wondering. They are spending thousands and thousands of dollars on this tour to talk to a total of, what, 200 people total so far?

  • 84. Sagesse  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:06 am

    @JonT

Oh, my sides hurt from laughing. However

"d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?"

You all should know that Canadians make the most insolent, uppity slaves.

  • 85. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:08 am

That's TOO funny. I was just thinking that at some point they were going to start explaining away the disparity in numbers by saying that the REAL Americans (you know, the ones they represent) are busy working on a weekday, whereas their detractors don't have anything better to do but follow them around and harass them.

I think I've been spending too much time reading their BS. I'm beginning to predict their messages before they deliver them.

  • 86. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:11 am

I don't think they expected such a small turnout. I'm sure they must have coordinated with the local right wing churches, etc. OTOH, I don't think the tour has been a total wash for them. They have managed to get some photos and footage, that when skillfully cropped and edited (and add some heart-tugging mood music on the videos) will be sufficiently effective PR pieces for them.

  • 87. Sean  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:13 am

When do you think NOM will finally realize this tour is doing nothing but hurting them and their cause? I'd formally recommend they cut their losses and back out now…if I wasn't having such a great time watching them crash and burn from their own incompetence.

  • 88. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:14 am

'“Thank you all for coming,” Julliane Appling , a representative from Wisconsin Family Action began. “[We hoped our turnout would be larger], but our people actually have jobs.”'

    Oh, that's great! :)

Do I sense a little irritation there? The stench of FAIL, perhaps? Delightful :)

  • 89. anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:15 am

"“Thank you all for coming,” Julliane Appling , a representative from Wisconsin Family Action began. “We hoped our turnout would be larger, but our people actually have jobs.”"

To which our response should be "And ours have consciences!"

  • 90. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:15 am

Didn't 'The West Wing' use this in one of the episodes? It has President Bartlett saying something like this to a Dr. Laura type character. If ONLY our president was willing to be so bold!

  • 91. Sean  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:15 am

They probably thought (somehow) they had more supporters out there somewhere. It's only now they're learning that no one is falling for their BS. Their tour will probably end up being a huge eye-opener for just how pointless and lost their cause really is.

  • 92. kevin  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:17 am

If 'their people actually have jobs' then why are they holding a rally in the middle of the day instead of when 'their' people can attend? Facinating.

  • 93. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:18 am

Makes you kind of wonder if they really truly believed that then why are they having all these rallyes in the afternoons? In other words if they knew their supporters were all working people (their words) then why not scheule the ralleys in the evenings? Fact is they thought that people would take off of work to participate in their H8tivating rallies (rallys, ralleys?) and people aren't.

Equality supports work also, but we can see they are taking time to show up and counter protest.

  • 94. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:21 am

I suspect they have a lot more supporters than their turnout would suggest. It's just that most of their supporters prefer to remain anonymous. Given that showing up with a sheet covering your face has been given such a bad name in modern culture (damn the liberals for ruining a good thing), they have to stay home. But they'll still gladly stand up in their churches and proclaim their allegiance and keep sending in the checks (as long as no one makes them publish the names of donors) and cast their votes in secret ballots.

  • 95. l8r_g8r  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:23 am

Darnit! I knew I was forgetting something. Marriage equality supporters aren't supposed to have jobs.

… because that would be good for the country?
… because if you're gay you must also be lazy?
… because if you're gay you can be fired by your employer?

Yeah, I'm going to pick door number 3, Bob.

  • 96. Sam  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:24 am

She's so stupid for several reasons.

One, its summer break so a majority of students are going to be in class right now. From the pictures, I see several young people in the crowd so obviously why not come to a counter-protest rally in support of their gay friends and neighbors.

Two, if you haven't looked at the job market right now, jobs are kind of scarce. While I don't care who is to blame for that, it goes back to what I said before. Support your gay friends and neighbors.

  • 97. nightshayde  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:24 am

Well — they can't have the rallies in the evening. "Their" people have families, don' cha know? If the women are out making a ruckus, who's going to cook dinner, change diapers, and read bedtime Bible stories to their spawn darling heterosexual children?

  • 98. anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 6:25 am

Publicly stated reactions to the low turnout, so far:

    1. Albany is a ghost town on weekends.
    2. We're not going to get into numbers.
    3. Our people have jobs.

    Which ones have I missed?
(I'm not counting the implied ones they've haven't yet stated, e.g., their supporters might fear the intimidation represented by teh gayz "surrounding a nursing mother", "storming the stage" and "bringing dogs")

NOM has been playing the helpless victim act all this time; I have to wonder/fear if this #FAIL of a tour is just a show for them to continue their martyrdom. They are definitely Spin Masters, I wouldn't put it past them.

I like to think our side has gone on Wheel of Fortune and bought an 'E' from Pat Sajak, because we have spinE and not just spin like NOM has.

Interesting article on NOMs Summer Marriage Tour.

In short the article intimates that NOM created this summer tour with hopes that counter protesters would incite violence, harassment and intimidation towards NOM supporters. Then NOM could use this as evidence to, "justify hiding the petition signatures that qualified Referendum 71,…"

You're right! At one of the rallies BB mentioned something about being thankful to those willing to brave the heat. I think he also made a comment about many of their supporters seeking a shady spot to sit. I remember thinking, when I saw the video, he was trying to suggest that there were a whole lot of people you couldn't see in the video, because they were all away from the podium in the shade.

    Great video, thanks!

  • 130. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:03 am

Actually, they have other things as well… they seem to have backed down from the "attack dogs" claim, but they have that Goebbels-would-be-proud video of the nursing mother, the pictures of people flipping them off (at least one person, can't remember if there were others) and the video of a man saying something like "watch out, we might kidnap that kid."

Overall, this is all they've really managed to cull, but without context, and if you're already inclined to believe their bs, it definitely could be effective.

  • 131. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:04 am

    It sorta makes sense…

But, it would mean that they (nomos) actually believe in rampaging mobs of gay people throwing rocks, burning cars, waving vicious dogs around…

I find it difficult to believe they have deluded themselves *that* much. But hey…

Maybe it really is more of a 'sympathy' tour more than anything else…?

  • 132. Jude  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:05 am

I was there. I was one of the organizers. That one sign about being yourself? My husband made it. You can tell because the perfect lettering took forever. That's what I get for marrying Mr. Font.

I'm a straight 55 year old woman, married 33 years. I took my 21 year old son and husband. We are so proud of our community today. We knew that we stood for others who live in places where it isn't safe.

"A number of people came up after the rally, telling us that the Madison cops (God bless ‘em), in their zeal to keep the counter-protestors out, were preventing them from joining NOM’s rally."

No pics from the event….probably too embarrassed….they really do everything in their power not to concede defeat.

  • 138. Bob  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:19 am

@Brian, Maggie, Louis, just a thought, but seeing as your big bus is so empty and using so much gas, could we just pile in a bunch of our unemployed, counter protestors, for the ride to the next stop, that would be a real loving Christian thing to do.

  • 139. Madison rally attend  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:21 am

It was amazing – Was glad to be a part of the Madison rally! I can't believe NOM thought it was a good idea to come here, of all the choices that they had in Wisconsin. One of the funniest chants of the afternoon was: "You need a hug / a big GAY hug!!!!"

It got even better when a woman from the NOM side crossed the yellow tape to the gay side, yelling and screaming at everyone – She got hugged by a bunch of us, which (of course) allowed us to modify the chant: "SHE GOT A HUG / A BIG GAY HUG!"

…And yet NOM somehow sees these amazing people as threatening? For God's sake, we're HUGGING people at a protest! Haha.

Let's keep up the good work, everyone! Thanks for all your support.

  • 140. James Tuttle  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:22 am

HAHA Has anyone read the NOM Blog? Here is their excuse for the lack of people in their rally.

"A number of people came up after the rally, telling us that the Madison cops (God bless ‘em), in their zeal to keep the counter-protestors out, were preventing them from joining NOM’s rally."

Someone made note of it before, but Thomas Jefferson has so many wonderful things to say that go against what our opponents would expect (see above sign). So much wisdom and equality from one of our country's founders. Sometimes it amazes me they can get away with claiming this country is a Christian nation. We are not a theocracy, so that argument should hold no water!

    Great video LLB!

The title of the video though: "Homosexual activists mob pro-marriage rally in Madison, WI"

I think they got that wrong:

    1. There were many straight people protesting
    2. The protesters were the real 'pro-marriage' people
    3. Not sure how protesting can be described as 'mob'

Maybe a better title: "Theocratic NOMosexual activists get their asses handed to them from Marriage Equality supporters in Madison, WI."

    Just a thought :)

You were right…. about the looong day and the need for a hankie.

The video where the parade came down the street chanting, and just kept coming and coming and coming…. amazing. The pictures of people who looked so happy to be there, together, to be reaffirming LOVE as a group, to KNOW that love beats hate every time…

It breaks my heart that Maggie and Brian and their entire crowd won't ever know that. They are never going to understand that what is important here is LOVE. Not body parts, not ancient mistranslated texts, not the us v. them mentality, just love. I don't personally know any one of those people in Wisconsin, but I do know that I love each and every one of them. And I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they love me.

Sorry, Maggie. Sorry Brian. Sorry NOM. Whatever heaven you think you are earning with your message of exclusion will never, ever be as good as that.

Kathleen is right…that brown suit is back…

It's great when you start to heart the Marriage Equality members coming down the road.

More positive signs of things shifting in favor of equality. Can't wait to bring the fight back to California!

@LLB, thanks for posting this video. After watching it I ahve come to the conclusion that we need a drummer or two in the counter protests, and I WISH NOM would bring back those preachers who speak in tongues. I miss that fun.

  • 167. Dave in CA  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:51 am

So how many plane loads of Mormons and Knights of Columbus will NOM be chartering into DC next month? Should we get a pool going?

  • 168. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:53 am

Mouse- Walmart? How do you come up with this sh*t? I can never think of lines like that. And you are so dead on.

  • 169. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:53 am

Hmm, we could start a whole thread on nomo/lighbulb jokes.

    Q. How many nomos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    A. None, god already did it in Genesis when he said "Let there be light". Besides, lightbulbs are a product of science, and therefore satanic.

    or

    Q. How many nomos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

    A. None, we aren't small enough to fit inside a lightbulb, and screwing outside of marriage is wrong.

    or …
    :)

  • 170. Chris  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:54 am

"It got even better when a woman from the NOM side crossed the yellow tape to the gay side, yelling and screaming at everyone."

That, and they've got a guy who advocates murder.

I really want to know why that sign guy wasn't arrested. You can't walk down the street carrying a sign that encourages lynching black people. But you can carry a sign that encourages lynching gay people? Isn't encouraging hate crimes illegal?

These people use the word "love" like North Korea uses the word "democratic": to a degree that implies they know better than any of us that they stand for nothing of the sort.

American Taliban. That is what we are fighting here.

  • 171. Chris  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:55 am

…I didn't mean to downplay the fact that you guys completely swamped them, by the way. That is fantastic. I was delighted to see that.

They need to understand how increasingly isolated they are.

  • 172. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:57 am

I see from the above photos that Madison had an official ACLU Legal Observer in attendance (maybe more than one). Well done!!!

Jude, I found your sign in the pics and you should not deride Mr Font. Honestly it was the neatest, and well, best font sign there. He makes a REALLY nice sign. I wonder what his rainbows would look like???

  • 174. Chris  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:58 am

"…screwing outside of marriage is wrong."

    HAHA. Nice.

  • 175. Steve  |  July 27, 2010 at 7:58 am

Jefferson was nominally an Anglican, but he was really a die-hard deist. He believed in some form of higher being (unlike atheists), but he absolutely despised organized religion and Christian leaders. He went so far as to write his own version of the Bible that removed all references to supernatural events.

Some of the other influential founding fathers like James Madison, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin had deistic leanings as well, although not as vocal as Jefferson.

And even if they were Christians, they clearly didn't want any religion in the government and its laws.

  • 176. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:03 am

Another great video LLB! This is the first time I've actually heard their spiel.

So, everyone wants to silence them. And, their cause is the same as those who fought to end slavery. Because of course, that's what we want, slavery. Doesn't the bible advocate slavery? But I digress…

And, back to RI again where "Protesters attempted to storm the stage." Haha.

I can't believe people actually buy into this shit. Maybe their poor showings are demonstrating that not many people are buying into it anymore.

And it is great to hear the counter protesters getting louder and louder as they approach. Beautiful! :)

  • 177. Bolt  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:05 am

To Heather, LOL! Good one. I harbor the same type of anger as you towards these fascist slobs. In this situation, your anger is properly discharged. The NOM Klan deserves it!

    Peace.

  • 179. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:12 am

Thank you thank you thank you thank you for lifting up my day! I ave been dealing with some bullcrap at work today, and it feels so good to escape and attend the rally in Madison vicariously through all of the people who showed up. I am liking these extra Pride celebrations =)

  • 181. Anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:19 am

Errrr…. does he realize that in fighting AGAINST the slave trade, William Wilberforce was fighting for CHANGE. To bring EQUALITY and freedom to people who had been oppressed?

Quite the opposite of Brian's current fight, where he is attempting to maintain the status quo and keep equality and civil rights AWAY from an oppressed group?

Perhaps we need to bring signs saying "Wilberforce fought for Equality, and so do WE!" in case he brings it up again?

  • 182. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:21 am

YES! But I think I called it feet on the ground. We need more feet on the ground. I took a lot of heat early on for my opinion on having strong counter protests at the NOM ralley sites. I always believed it would motivate us. Protesting off site or being silent is not, in my opinion motivating. Caveat beccause Ronnie said the New Jersy counter protest was uplifting and motivating. We have to get feet on the ground, and not just at a gay Pride Parade.

Look how many people here are writing, I wish they would come to Chicago, I wish they would come to Seattle, I wish they would come to "My city"? Why? Becasue the counter protests motivate us to want to join in when we have a chance.

To build that sense of community and shared interest not a lot beats out a good strong feet on the ground protest. You feel better afterwards. And next time you will not hesitate to join in, and you will bring people with you.

I really give a rip the way NOM is going to spin this, I know it is making us stronger and more united. Until one day we can have that great non violent march with two million feet on the ground. The MLK way. But to get there we need these grass roots feet on the ground protests to build the momentum and to get people to join in, and scale it up to a true national movement. A national movement people will drive across the country to attend. As I said in a previous post, you first have to spark a small flame of freedom and hope in our hearts. These counter protests are the spark.

Yup Bob, feet on the ground. Thanks for thinking of me, I sure did take a lot of heat early on on this topic.

  • 183. bJason  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:22 am

    Q. How many NOMos does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

A1. Hopefully no more than thirty or so.

    A2. Jesus.

A3. (from NOM) Don't answer them they're mean.

  • 184. Felyx  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:24 am

Hey NOM, how many of you to screw in a lightbulb?

NOM: Can't right now… too busy screwing gays!

How many ex-gay 'scholars' to screw in a lightbulb?

None, they've got Rent Boys for that!

    Felyx

  • 185. Steve  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:25 am

Scratch that- it is "invited readers only". It doesn't give you the opportunity to provide your info and request access. I guess NOM realized how bad the blog was for the tour's PR.

'Errrr…. does he realize that in fighting AGAINST the slave trade, William Wilberforce was fighting for CHANGE. To bring EQUALITY and freedom to
    people who had been oppressed?
    '

You'd think so. My understanding is that in earlier rallies, he was comparing their struggle to mainline hate as being equivalent to Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement. Didn't hear that on any of today's videos that I've seen.

Maybe they had to back off of that comparison.

Neat how they attempt to position themselves as being the oppressed ones, fighting for what is right.

Hint to BB: I don't think anyone is buying it anymore.

  • 188. Felyx  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:30 am

For those of you who don't know…Brian had to say 'One Man One Woman' 466 times… both as punishment for skipping town earlier and to fill out the hour. (Thank God we only had to hear the last 10 minutes.)

    Thought you all should know!

This is as close as I can get to that same feeling….over 40 years later. Being part of a change of this magnitude in our country is proof that democracy works…not always easily…but it does works.
The old ways of thinking are fading away and something new and exciting is about to replace them.
    I'm a proud American today!!!

LLB- You are the video master tonight!!! Another great video. Am I the only one who was sitting in front of my computer and literally chanting with the crowd and pumping my fist in the air?

Brian Brown is really irritated with the counter protesters. he keeps saying he wants this to be a civilized conversation. I say if he want that he should get the hell off of the steps of these state capitols and go have a meeting with the HRC. Now they are very civilized, and will talk your arm off. When you meet o the step of our capitol buildings, you are saying, "Bring it ON" so Brian you got what you asked for.

I was just about to make a post wondering if we would see the brown suite and Kathleen beat me to the punch.

  • 196. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:49 am

Oh that's great Alan – I wonder how long they will survive, or should they be archived for posterity somewhere :)

I had mostly avoided that hater site, but am reading the comments now. I can see why they wanted to hide them from the public :)

One comment (still reading them) made me laugh my ass off, in regards to the 'killer labradors', from 'Michael':

'A labrador is gathering. It's fur is dark. It's bark is strong. And I…am afraid.'

    LOL!

  • 199. Kari Jo Freudigmann  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:53 am

It was truly a mistake on their part to pick Madison if they were hoping for a small crowd of second-class citizens searching for rights. Four hundred sixty-six marchers and with less than three weeks of planning. I'd say we did a pretty good job.

  • 200. bJason  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:55 am

  • 201. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 8:57 am

I've been waiting for NOM's reaction to the dalmatian with the rainbow chiffon neck ruffle. Besides being just toooo cute, my experience with dalmatians suggests that if you said "Attack" they'd forget what they were doing before they could execute the command. (w/apologies to the dalmatian owners here) :)

  • 202. Greg  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:01 am

    Aw, last video's private. :(

  • 203. Dave P.  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:10 am

Yes, can someone please change this? Many of us can't view this video. THanks!

  • 204. Anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:10 am

OK… little disclaimer about this long post… I just posted it in response to today's entry at the NOM blog (which went on about "truth and love", but since it will never see the light of day over there, I am reposting here. Sorry it is so long.

Sorry, Brian. You don't love us. Love is that condition where the other person's happiness is intrinsic to your own.

If you loved us, you would not be fighting so hard to keep us away from love. If you loved us, you would not be trying to keep one of the best things in the world all to yourselves, you would be instead trying to share it with us. If you loved us, you would be opening your arms and saying "JOIN us in this blessed relationship that is marriage!"

If you loved us, you would not be standing against us, you would be fighting for us. If you loved us, you would accept us as we are and welcome us into your hearts, your homes, your lives, as we stand ready to welcome you. Come visit me! Let me take you and your family out for dinner and lets talk about our differences and find our common ground! If you loved us, you would be glad to learn about what you do that is hurtful to us, and to share with us what we do that is hurtful to you so that we can work out ways to live together in peace in this world.

If you loved us, you would not be afraid of us. You would not keep claiming that somehow two men having a piece of paper from the state that says they are married and entitled to the same equal benefits you enjoy is detrimental to your relationship to your wife. If you loved us, you would be in the front row when two women stood up and pledged their eternal love to each other under the eyes of a loving God and their family and friends, not saying that these two are not fit parents simply because neither has a Y chromosome.

If you loved us, you would care that we are treated like second class citizens and would speak out against it, not work to make sure that our status is kept oppressed. You would decry the fact that there are people who have been in long term, committed relationships much longer than your marriage who cannot make medical decisions for each other. You would rail against the fact that some people cannot get insurance, have no guarantees that their wills are going to be honored, may lose the only home they have known for decades, may not be allowed to sit with their dying partners, all because of one little word that instead you want to keep all to yourself.

If you truly loved us, you would be standing on OUR side of the crowd, looking at the group that is saying "we have this incredible institution, this mystical pact, this affirmation of love and commitment, and you can't have it!" and you would be crying, as I am today, looking at the pictures from Wisconsin.

I am crying with joy. I am crying because while I have never met any of the people in those pictures in Wisconsin personally, I love each and every one of them. And I know without a shadow of a doubt that each of them loves me. Because that is what it comes down to. Love. Not body parts, not ancient texts, not any us versus them mentality, but love. And each and every person in that crowd knows that love beats hate in the end, every single time.

And I am sorry for you. Sorry that you can't be standing on this side of the line, will never know that you are in a crowd that loves. That WANTS to love. That doesn't want to take anything away from you, does not want to make your marriage any less significant, does not want to break up your family or refuse to let you adopt children, or in any way keep you out, but rather wants to reinforce the joy that is marriage, revitalize it, fill it with hope and strength, share their love and joy with you.

So today I am bathed in love from a group of 466 people who I may never meet, but who love me so much that they will get out in the heat and humidity and listen to you say "I love you, but really, you don't deserve the joy that we have!" so that they can say "yes, we do!" and mean it for themselves, and me, and millions of others… and you, Brian. You deserve that joy too. We all do.

"I took a lot of heat early on for my opinion on having strong counter protests at the NOM ralley sites."

SG, I've tried to let this go, but you insist on continuing to bring it up. So I want to say a couple of things for the sake of clarity.. just so there is no lingering misunderstanding.

First of all, I still think the kinds of things you were advocating, such as throwing shoes at the podium or at pictures of Maggie Gallagher, will accomplish nothing but give NOM great footage for their 'we're persecuted' campaign.

But more to the point, I just want to be clear that what you were getting heat over, at least from me, was NOT that you had a different opinion than mine. It was the fact that you claimed the REASON you believe in the tactics you were suggesting was that you have more passion for the cause than those who have a different opinion. And that the REASON you feel more passionately is that you have a greater stake in the issue than do two gay men who have been waiting years to gain the legal recognition of marriage to protect their family. You went so far as to say that, after all, they could protect their relationship through various legal contracts, wills, etc., and since their children were grown, there weren't any minor children involved. (actually, you modified your argument to indicate minor children after first making the assumption that they didn't have children at all and being corrected).

You have chosen to either ignore the fact, or you really don't understand, that THAT was what you were getting heat about. So I hope this clears up any misunderstanding.

  • 212. Ann S.  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:21 am

I hope so, but the FB page for the Madison counter-protest showed ~500 attendees, the FB page for the St. Paul counter-protest only has a handful right now. Maybe it is being organized elsewhere besides the one page I have seen.

I wonder if any of the newspapers in the Madison area would be willing to print it. It's probably too long to qualify for a letter to the editor printing. But maybe some of the local activists might have some ideas about which media outlets might consider printing it. I'd love to see it appear in local papers, even if it's just the 'alterna pres' in some of the other cities where NOM plans to appear.

  • 229. Dylan  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:47 am

I really want to be part of the LGBT protests, but alas I live to far away :(

Also how can I watch the Brian Brown interview above? It says "private" lol

  • 230. Ron  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:50 am

Wow! That is so beautiful!! Thank you for that. I also want to express my heartfelt thanks and send hugs to all the equality folks today in Madison! You ALL rock!

On another topic……anyone at this point have any inside inkling as to when Judge Walker is going to come forth with his verdict?? Every day I "refresh" my Google News "prop 8 + trial + verdict" and get no news at all. It's driving me (and all of you too, no doubt) crazy waiting. What's taking so long? Anyone know anything?

    Love,

    Ron

  • 231. Ann S.  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:54 am

As to Prop 8, I asked my brother-in-law (who is very up on these things and often is in the news) for any info and all he could say is that Walker is in town (unlike the prior rumor-fest, when it turned out he was out of town). There is a good chance it will be before the end of August because some of his law clerks leave then and new ones arrive, although he does have some permanent law clerks because he's the presiding judge.

    That's all I know. I wish I knew more.

  • 232. Heather  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:55 am

They are going to be waiting a long time for that apology!

  • 233. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 9:58 am

David Boies said in an interview he expected around mid August. That would be a pretty typical time frame, 2 months or so after closing arguments.

Hat's off to fiona64's participation in that blog. It's no wonder they banned her. They aren't really interested in 'facty' stuff :)

@Kathleen: Yes, the the dalmation attack dog. Where's the outrage? Well, they seemed so obviously stupid when about the attack labs (even from people on their side), I'm guessing they didn't really want to look that stupid again if they could help it :)

    NOM = GENETIC TERRORISTS

    on the other side:

    MAGGIE GALLAGHER

    BASTARD CHILD

    AND BIGOT

    Laissez Bon Temps!

Are you actually from somewhere in Wisconsin? If so, the Isthmus (website: thedailypage.com) might print it. They try to mostly feature locals, though. Plus, I don't think something from an out-of-stater is going to carry much weight with anyone that doesn't agree with you.

There are a number of socially conservative people that do read the Isthmus, if for no other reason than it's free.

  • 240. Josh  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:03 am

Is it any surprise that the group of people whose rights are being denied would turn out in larger numbers than the group of people who really don't have anything to gain? Of course not. Anti-equality people gain nothing real from keeping us out of the marriage "club". Their argument that including gay couples in marriage "cheapens" it is already wearing out with the ANGRY TEAM.

  • 241. Straight Grandmother  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:05 am

I am jsut so curious to see if he will hand it down before or after the Counter Protest in DC on August 15th. If it was before it could make for a heck of a celebration on our side, assuming he rules in our favor, and I hpe he rules broadly.

  • 242. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:09 am

'And each and every person in that crowd knows that love beats hate in the end, every single time.'

Now there's some real truth for BB and klan clan.

Hate always loses in the end.

If the report that this FAIL tour is to get film/evidence of violence toward anti-equality people for court cases, hopefully they won't get anything that is not at least equally countered by the all the peaceful protest.

Based on what I've seen so far, there has been far more peaceful disagreement than anything remotely approaching violence.

If NOM can spin yelling at bb and the breast-feeding-mom into something a court would use to block names of initiative donors, they have pure magic on their side. Which, btw, is a sign of the devil, hmmmm…..

  • 245. Mykelb  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:14 am

If the NOM supporters were true believers, they should have stoned Maggie to death for not being a virgin when she got married. Also, both Brian and Maggie should be shunned by their own communities for gluttony.

  • 246. Ray in MA  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:15 am

    Very good points Josh.

Thie NOM Farce could be a ploy to scare the ignorant marriage bigots into thinking they need to stand up and fight us, cuz its a comin! Soon!

  • 247. Chris  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:15 am

That is why we will win.

We have families being deprived of basic rights. They have addled octogenarians who have been trying to find something to do with their days ever since the cross burnings petered out.

The rising hysteria of their propaganda implies that they fully recognize how doomed they are.

  • 248. Chris  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:17 am

So far, the most attention they've gotten is to one of their own gang who showed up with a sign proclaiming that gay people should be lynched.

If that doesn't scream "animus", I don't know what does.

  • 249. Anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:21 am

Not only is it insulting to the counter protesters, it's insulting to their own supporters! MASSIVE FAIL!!!

  • 251. JonT  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:25 am

Wow, those comments were… impressively ignorant…

Don't these people know about the googles and the youtubes and such? Don't they know they could see for themselves what went down? So many calls for "you should tell the police", "and you should send pictures to the police", blah blah blah. Maybe they didn't realize that the police were actually there, and saw nothing illegal going on? Hmmm?

I could only stomach part of the article – that's what hate really looks like folks.

I noticed Vito Oliver tried to jump in there. Bold dude! :)

  • 252. Anonygrl  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:29 am

I'll try dropping it to the major papers in the other cities they are hitting, who knows who might bite… it'll need a tiny preface explaining that NOM is on tour promoting "one man, one woman" (and headed to YOUR town on ), in Madison 54 of them were met with by 466 protesters, and Brian said "we respond to intolerance and to incivility with love." in his speech, and my name at the bottom. Which, by the way, is Vienna Hagen, not that it makes a difference.

  • 253. Kathleen  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:31 am

Finally got to see the BB video.

He's absolutely correct that he's part of the new civil rights movement. He just doesn't seem to understand that he's on the wrong side of the movement…

  • 254. CeeVee0125  |  July 27, 2010 at 10:32 am

Loved the quip from Mags that their people actually work and then when you look at the people standing directly in front of her, a good many are of retirement age…lovely. My friend Toni (shoutout) was there and guess what, she works. What an @ss. I'm a former Northern Illinois-er and LOVE Madison. Any chance to visit there will be well worth you time and money.

I should go back in the comments and read how many of us said we were crying. This video, it made me cry. What these, at the NOM Rally site counter protests do, is spark a small flame of hope and determination in our hearts. For me, with each protest the flame burns stronger.

Wonder if it has finally occurred to BB & MG that their tour has done more to energize us equal rights folks than their target audience of NOMers? Or that, regardless of NOM’s spin attempts, they aren’t coming off too well in what little (any) MSM coverage they are getting?

Does anyone know if any MSM has picked up on the “lynching as the solution to gay marriage” sign yet? I haven’t done a lot of searching, but so far have only seen it mentioned on pro-equality sites.

This article from San Diego Gay and Lesbian News asserts that this NOM tour is all a plot to generate evidence of harassment and intimidation for some of their ongoing litigation.

    http://sdgln.com/news/2010/07/27/hrc-nom-your-summer-bus-tour-sham

“The bread crumbs of their deceit are clear,” said Sainz, who is a former spokesman for San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. “Let’s add it all up: NOM and its allies are making a last-ditch legal stand in Washington and Maine that they should be specially entitled to hide their political activities, and they’re saying that harassment and intimidation should provide them this cover. At the same time, Brian Brown schedules a series of virtually unattended weekday afternoon events hoping for counter-protests that they can then use as evidence of harassment and intimidation. Why else would NOM execute such half-hearted non-events and then completely subjugate its so-called ‘pro-marriage’ message in favor of devoting its energies almost exclusively to condemning lawful protesters?”

Yes, I agree with Alan E.

That last commercial during that last weekend told people that it was okay to vote yes reject the new law. By doing so, you're protecting traditional marriage and the gays will still have their domestic partnerships, which are just as good as marriage. That was a complete lie, because the DP here addresses very few areas and most of those deal with the illness or death of a partner. But it gave many people "permission" to go ahead and vote to discriminate because we'd still be okay (so then maybe it wasn't discrimination after all, they might have been thinking).

This reminds me about some discussions we've had about the number of supporters attending these rallies versus the number of people who are not attending but watching and getting their message nonetheless. In Maine we outspent the Yes on 1 campaign and we definitely out-organized (I got regular emails from their campaign pleading for money and volunteers) but they we still able to spread their message via the built in networks of the churches and social groups (such as Knights of Columbus). They won by a very small margin, but they won. We might be showing ourselves really big right now, but without the mainstream media to show the regular joes and janes who NOM really is and how much this means to us, this tour is just going to be getting their people to be more steadfast in their support for them. (Is there more action of support on our side, or are organizers still facing the high rates of apathy among our supporters)?

  • 305. Straight Grandmother  |  July 28, 2010 at 1:08 am

@Kathleen I was talking in my post above about the types of protests which were good and effective. At the time of the discussion by far the majority of the posters felt that it was best to not engage NOM at all, just ignore them; or have an off site protest, or silent protest. I was in the minority on that one (I am still mulling over my throwing of shoes idea though, I think it has merit, very symbolic)

Do you remember the young person from Queer Rising and the, err…discusion that took place with him and Fiona? We were all very passionate in our opinions, this is the discussion I was thinking about when I posted.

In no way in my post above was I alluding to the awful back and forth I had with another poster, and I do not wish to bring him back into this as I promised him the last word.

I think you did a pretty good job paraphasing what I said during that discussion and in the follow up, except for one point. It is not for myself that generates my passion on the issue, it is for and on behalf of my grandchildren of whom I am not their legal grandmother and I desperatly want to be, you did not mention them in your synopsis.

Here this is what I take issue with that you wrote, "is that you have a greater stake in the issue than do two gay men who have been waiting years to gain the legal recognition of marriage to protect their family" This statement is making it about me as if I am better than everybody else and that is not true, it isn't about me, it is about my grandchildren. Futher more in my previous post on this when you harshly called me out, I went even further and gave 3 examples families with children, couples who are seperated by nationality and unable to live in the same country, and couples who may need the healthcare benefits of their partners. I said all of these people will get more benefits than Adam and Steve who are happily living together for 30 years and who strongly, even desperately wish to marry. And because they will be getting more benefits, honestly the fire might just burn a little hotter in their guts. Kathleen, my BIG MISTAKE was saying the name of the poster instead of saying Adam and Steve, thaty made it personal to one person who you have defended several times now, and criticized me. I should have kept it generic. Heat of the battle Kathleen, heat of the battle LOL. Would I do it differently today, yes. But I do not take back my opinion of Marriage Equality providing different HUGE benefits, the benefits are not all going to be equal because people are situated differenty. So yeah I got a white heat fire burning and I support feet on the ground protesting because the benefits to my grandchildren are going to be more than Adam and Steve receive once the law is changed.

To finish up I would like to use your words, "Just to be clear" in this post ABOVE and in any FUTURE posts I am never ever referring to that conversation with the certain poster. When I said "catching heat" I simply meant I was in the minority opinion on how to protest and very few people were agreeing with me, that is all Kathleen, on how to protest, not that I was catching heat from you. You read that into what I wrote, I never meant it that way and didn't write it that way.

Let me put it another way, if two prisoners are planning a prison break and one of them is on death row and the other has a sentence of 3 to 5 years, which one do you think is the most motivated and will "probably" work hardest to escape? [Different benefits, one is getting just freedom, the other one life + freedom][

I sincerely and truly would like you to have the last word on this topic. And at the same time respectfully ask you to let the discussion then end. Kathleen we are on the same side, I truly wish for Equality for Everyone. I have always appreciated your contributions here, and your continuation of calling me on the carpet pains me, it really does. I am hoping we can put this to the side and continue to work together for the cause. Do you enjoy raining on my Madison Wisconsin parade? Because that is what you are doing. I want to be happy, this was a GREAT counter protest (my kind of counter protest) from my home state and then I wake up in the morning to look for new posts and see antoher diss from you, it is enough it really is.

I didn't agree with Fiona, the way she responded to the Queer Rising dude. I am not riding her ass about it a week later? The fact is at the time I didn't even say anything to her, even though I didn't agree with her. She like you is a terrific contributor here (I like to think I add a little something here myself) we need to find a way to get along, for the cause, even though we don't always agree with each other on every point. I do think the fire of Equlaity burns hotter for some people than for other people. We are all not the same. And because of that, we may choose to protest differently. Ta-da I'm done.

Timothy, you're right — when the Bishop started saying "Peace be with you" and getting responses as though it were a mass, I did a double-take. Although as Richard points out, we shouldn't really be all that surprised.

SG, Interesting revisionist version of what transpired. You were very explicit about this being all about YOU.

And the fact that you think the only mistake you made was defending your position as it relates to two specific gay men instead just two generic gay guys speaks volumes. As was pointed out to you previously, these are the same arguments that organizations like NOM make to deny marriage equality.

You continue to admit that something went awry in your outbursts, but it's always about some action that isn't at the heart of the matter. It has become obvious to me that you are either constitutionally incapable of understanding how offensive your statements were/are or you do know and just can't bring yourself to admit it.

Sadly, I think none of this has served as a 'teachable moment' for you. You appear to be just as set in your assumptions about gay people (e.g, two gay men probably don't have children) and just as incapable of seeing the world from someone else's point of view as you were when this exchange started.

Sorry, the above post from "JustSubscribing" is from me – "Kathleen" in case that wasn't obvious. :)

Wisconsin gay marriage opponents fire up counter-protesters

Quote from story: Counter-protester Ashley Struck of Whitewater says that may be true, but the way things are going it may take a while. In the meantime, she says she'll attend rallies, or counter-rallies like these to fight for her legal right as a lesbian to get married and have benefits like anyone else. Struck says gay couples don’t judge straight couples for their beliefs, and adds they “just want acceptance for they are and want equality straight couples have.”

I also noticed that Faux News 21 got things wrong about NOM.
First, aren't they based in New Jersey, not DC?
Second, is BB the presdient or the director?
Of course, they would insinuate that NOM is the victim, wouldn't they? This is Faux News, after all.

  • 313. Lesbians Love Boies  |  July 28, 2010 at 6:55 am

BB is the director, Maggie is the president

  • 314. Kathleen  |  July 28, 2010 at 7:09 am

NOM has conflicting information on its website. Here it says MG is Pres and BB is ED http://www.nationformarriage.org/site/c.omL2KeN0L

But I think they just haven't updated that page yet.

If you recall, BB took over as president last April. There are a number of fairly recent press releases at NOM's site showing Brown as President.

Kathleen, I heard in the video on the day that maggie showed up (or the next rally she spoke in) they introduced her as the president. At that time I thought Brian was the president, so I went to the website and saw it was maggie.

In other words, they are introducing her at these rallies as NOM Prez

  • 317. Kathleen  |  July 28, 2010 at 7:29 am

How very interesting…. Because in this press release from earlier a month ago, BB is cited as President: http://www.nationformarriage.org/site/apps/nlnet/

  • 318. Lesbians Love Boies  |  July 28, 2010 at 7:37 am

Okay, since I know I can some times be wrong : ) I went back to view the tape.

Man introducing her, "Maggie, serves as the Chairman of NOM and also serves as the President…"

That's when the gentleman introducing her stopped (but upon second glance, it may have been because he stopped to acknowledge supporters cheers)

Then he says, "…very good, as the president of the institute for marriage…"

so, you are correct. Maggie is the chairman of NOM

  • 319. Kathleen  |  July 28, 2010 at 7:41 am

Oh, Drat. I was hoping we were seeing signs of whatever internal power struggle is at play here starting to heat up. :)

  • 321. Richard A. Walter (s  |  July 28, 2010 at 8:12 am

oh, okay. I thought Maggie stepped down as President and remained as chairman, and turned the reins over to Brian as President. My goof.

  • 322. Kathleen  |  July 28, 2010 at 8:14 am

Richard, that is what happened. NOM just hasn't updated that particular page on their website.

    Dueling protests on gay marriage

MADISON, Wis. — Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage, which opposes same-sex unions, has brought his 23-city bus tour here in hopes of drawing a crowd. He has succeeded, but not in the way you might expect.

On a warm weekday, with the university students mostly on vacation and the legislature in recess, the state Capitol grounds have a placid midsummer air. But with the appointed time of noon at hand, that is about to change.

As Brown stands at the foot of the Capitol, watching a few sympathizers gather around a lectern, a distant rumble intrudes on the quiet. Marching up State Street are 200 or 300 demonstrators, carrying signs and chanting slogans, all attracted by the chance to repudiate the NOM message as noisily as they can.

This was an absolutely amazing experience. I live in Madison, WI and attending the counter-protest yesterday. I am so glad that I went. I was right at the front of this group and once i reached the top of the steps of the Wisconsin Capitol Building and looked back, seeing how many people were there, it really did bring tears to my eyes.

All the speakers on NOM's side suddenly referencing this recent study of gay men's relationships reminds me of the segments John Stewart does where he cuts from one right-wing pundit to another in rapid fire, showing how they've all latched onto the most recent catch phrase in an apparently well-coordinated campaign. Sadly, it works with a lot of the audience – you know, say it enough times and it becomes "true."
